Louisville Basketball Opens Season with 91-50 Win over Simmons College

The Louisville Cardinals opened the Kenny Payne era in magnificent fashion on Tuesday night, defeating Simmons College by a score of 91-50 in an exhibition game at the KFC Yum! Center defeated Simmons College by a score of 91-50.

Payne was pleased with the team's overall performance, but he did see some areas for improvement.

"I think this game was one that we can build on and we need to identify and evaluate who can understand what concepts," Payne said. Payne said, "But at the end of the day, I need to know who I can count on to fight. Who can I count on to be disciplined? Who can I count on to understand the game and execute it? That's what frustrates me."

Payne was especially disappointed in the team's turnovers. The Cardinals had 20 turnovers while Simmons scored 20 points.

"I think it was more carelessness, to be honest," Payne said." You have three choices, you pick the worst one, and they ended up with the ball. Trey White gets a pass and shoots. He dribbled; he had a throw-in. He dribbled again, and then when they broke it up, he passed the ball again. Teams are going to break us down defensively, and we have to understand to be a willing passer, and when the shot goes in, you go for it, and we had two layups."

Despite the turnovers, Payne was pleased with his team's defense. The Cardinals limited Simmons to 37 percent shooting and caused 16 turnovers.

"I thought our defense was outstanding," Payne said." We gave up 30 points inside, but that was mostly because we rotated too late. We have to rotate and block shooters better."

Payne also saw flashes of talent from some players. Curtis Williams scored a team-high 17 points and Skyy Clark contributed 15 points and six assists.

"I liked that Curtis learned the lessons of the Red and White game in this game," Payne said." I like that he scored early in the first half. In the second half, he scored a couple baskets in rhythm. He didn't force shots. I need him to understand that's what college basketball is all about. Now, the other thing he needs to improve on offensively is passing. I think he'll compete and he's learning. He's not afraid of it. But I need him to know exactly what he's doing - when and where."

Overall, Payne was pleased with the team's first outing. He knows there is still a lot of work to be done, but he believes the Cardinals will be a competitive team this season.

"I'm excited for this team," Payne said." We have a lot of talent, but we also have a lot of youth. It's going to take some time for them to learn the system and learn how to play together. But I believe we're going to be a good team."
