Sean Payton explains own hiring process

Sean Payton is one of the hottest names on the NFL's coaching market during the 2023 offseason. He is set to meet with four of the five teams that have coaching vacancies and will likely be among the top candidates for each club.As such, it's no surprise that NFL fans have heard a lot about Payton as the NFL's hiring cycle heats up.What has been a surprise, however, is just how much NFL fans have heard about Payton's job search from the man himself.Payton has worked for Fox since his retirement from the Saints after the 2021 season, and he has been a regular on the network's NFL pregame coverage and its other sports programming. The plan for Payton, in order, is to interview with the Texans, Broncos and Panthers; he did not mention when or if he will meet with the Cardinals.The Texans announced Monday night that they had completed their interview:We have completed an interview with Sean Payton for our head coaching position. "I think ultimately, the compensation for the saints would be a mid or later first-round pick."Would that asking price eliminate any team that doesn't have that specific type of draft capital? He also explained that while he would like to find a team with an established quarterback, those are few and far between among teams that have coaching openings.So, because of that, ownership is the most important element for Payton so that the team can avoid internal struggles and pitfalls that might end up hurting his team's chances of winning."It's hard to win in this league, and it's certainly harder to win in this league if there's internal problems before even playing opponent," Payton said. Of course, some will wonder about Payton's candidacy with the ever-unstable Texans after that comment. After all, they are searching for their fifth coach of the last four seasons.However, Payton detailed that he at least knows Cal McNair thanks to a series of practices the Saints and Texans held together during his time in New Orleans. So, he is comfortable enough with the owner and likes the a sets he has at his disposal.They've got really good draft capital," Payton said.
